Oh, absolutely! I think he had a turning point even earlier though. After they lose Gore, Fairholme, and Sir John, he and James are the only two full officers left on Erebus. He’s the sole lieutenant for nearly 100 men since so many of the Terrors moved to his ship. He’s overworked and Crozier doesn’t seem to give a damn. Worse, Crozier berates James, steals liquor from them, and hoards all 3 of the remaining lieutenants for like 20 sailors.

Dundy makes do though, and picks up the slack. There’s a marked shift it seems from his happy-go-lucky attitude earlier to his buckled-down approach now. Then he loses his toes. He loses his toes in a grim, unsympathetic fashion where even the doctor who’s supposed to be the kinder one with the good bedside manner is arguing with the other. Dundy probably didn’t expect to be coddled, but damn, I don’t even think Stanley was really looking when he snipped his toes. That’s another blow to him, exactly like you said.

From here on we see flashes of the old Dundy: the Benjo scene, shooting off his gun at carnival, the scene where Jopson is made a lieutenant and he smiles and shakes his hand. But even this last one is tinged with a certain cynicism that’s becoming characteristic of Dundy. He looks to James in almost disbelief when he hears there’s going to be a new lieutenant. Why? Why now? He spent nearly a year managing on his own and now Crozier decides to promote someone? And one of his favorites with no experience to boot? He does seem to be happy and welcoming to Jopson, but I do think there’s a bit of resentment there too.

The last straw is when James goes. He falls right next to him. Dundy is one of the first people to reach him and to try and help him up. Even in that he fails. He looks to Crozier when he realizes that he’s actually hurting James by pressing on his wounds. How does Crozier know about this when he doesn’t? He isn’t there when the man who was supposed to be his partner on this grand adventure dies. After that, his transformation is complete. I believe that his next scene after the funeral is the one where he urges Little to abandon the sick. There are many ways to interpret this decision, but I’ve always seen it as him falling back on his military training. He was a soldier once and is trying to triage the situation. What’s better: them all dying trying to save the captain and haul the ill or giving at least a few of them (himself included) an ever so slightly greater chance at survival? He’s past kindnesses at this point. That died when James fell. All that’s left is to walk until they can’t anymore and meet their inglorious end, whatever that may be.

i love dundy. he is clearly having a character arc but he is having that character arc Over There and away from the rest of the main characters. and so every time he shows up it's like. "WHAT are you doing."

Jack’s family, Ruggie’s grandma, Falena, Maleficia, Ms.Rosehearts, Just now Vil’s dad is in the picture which I am really happy but now I’m wondering about his mom, and so Deuce’s mom.

I mean, some HAVE a silhouette!! It could mean they do have a design in the making/ready to show. They could’ve shown us Falena in the Tamashina (hope I said that correctly) event, but didn’t (prolly to make Leona not so σ(▼□▼メ) and it’s understandable)

Anyhow, any idea/headcannon about this? Who do you want to see first?

I'm wondering if everyone might eventually get a travel event? like they've now introduced with Vil's that it doesn't have to be specifically hometowns, so that opens things up a lot! (especially if they have to figure out how to do three separate Coral Sea visits) (how would that even work otherwise)

but yeah, I hope everyone gets a chance! there's a lot of backstory characters I would LOVE to meet. :D :D :D though I do think some of them don't really suit the more light-hearted tone of the events (pretty sure you're right about that being why Falena wasn't in Tamashina-Mina, that would've just been. too much for Leona.) so like...we're probably not ever going to meet the Rosehearts. or Maleficia (although I maintain that this would be THE funniest possible way to introduce her outside of the main story, and actually I would love this a lot, can we please Twst) (I need to see her to put Malleus in a froofy little outfit and tell him what a handsome boy he is). but they've sprung surprises like Kifaji on us, and honestly anyone who shows up and tells embarrassing stories about characters' childhoods is good in my book!

characters off the top of my head who I most want to meet: literally any of the Zigvolts, Azul's mom, Ace's brother, Che'nya's grandfather (<- I think he would be a good one for Riddle) (please just any non-terrible adult in his life), any member of Rook's family because I need to see how they managed to produce him, and...really just whoever they can come up with for Silver.
